December 2009

Christmas Day - paddled kayak with bottlenose dolphins at Goat Island. They jumped out of the water and swam around. Good diving at the Outpost with schools of kingfish, koheru, parore, blue maomao and sweep. Several giant boarfish, porcupinefish and large octopus. Apricot nudibranchs, Tritonia incerta were feeding and laying eggs on the soft corals. December 11th common dolphins rode our boat's bow while gannets dived down around us. Dived the Outpost amongst colourful sponges. Large short-tailed stingray rested amongst the kelp and schools of kingfish moved past.
Saw Under the Mountain which shows off the Hauraki Gulf's spectacular scenery and the extinct volcanos of Mt Eden, Rangitoto, One Tree Hill and Lake Pupuke. December 8th and 9th Whangaparaoa College students snorkelled with us at Goat Island. December 1st, students from Birkdale Intermediate School snorkelled with us and then explored the marine life on the rocky shore. Dive NZ magazine published our Northland Dive Sites, featuring 60 sites with GPS co-ordinates. Also featured our article on kayak diving - so if you haven't tried it yet - read about how to.
